Heat Pumps for your swimming pool
Cost to generate 1 Million btu of heat
Who ever thought doing something good for the environment would also save you money? It’s true! A Rheem heat pump is built with the latest eco-friendly R410A refrigerant that operates more efficiently than R-22. But the most amazing aspect of a heat pump pool heater is its operating efficiency compared to gas heaters. A heat pump operates at 5 to 6 times the efficiency of a standard gas, oil or electric pool heater. If you live in an area where your natural or propane gas costs have out-paced your electricity costs, the savings can be big. The chart illustrates just how much money can save using average energy cost data.
Now you can afford to heat your pool more often...
While it’s true that nothing beats a gas heater for bringing your pool or spa up to temperature rapidly, it can be expensive to operate. Keep in mind that with a gas heater, you also need to run expensive gas lines, or install an unsightly propane storage tank. Rheem units operate quietly, cleanly and most of all efficiently. Installation is no harder than installing a pool pump. Now you can trust your backyard investment to the same people who have been in homes across America for over 75 years. Your Rheem heat pump is designed to provide years of safe, reliable service, and can save you money over time compared to other heating methods. Ask your Rheem heat pump dealer for more details!
Reliability...
Rheem pool heater heat pumps are the only heat pumps manufactured by a major air conditioning company. Rheem HVAC product lines have successfully utilized heat pump technology for over 30 years. By taking our field proven technology and combining it with our industry leading pool heating products, we have developed a heat pump pool heater that is second to none. In the unlikely event that you have a service problem, one toll-free call will have your heater up and running again. It’s that simple. Rheem heat pumps are truly hassle-free
Extend Your Swim Season in Comfort...
A Rheem heat pump can turn your backyard pool investment into resort style living almost year round. Get the most out of your pool by keeping it comfortable and open longer. Rheem heat pumps give you the flexibility of warming your pool water in the months before and after your normal swim season. Your backyard evening events are rarely slowed down by cool weather when you have a Rheem heat pump on duty.
How does a heat pump work? And skip the black magic part...
Rheem air-source heat pump pool heaters work much like a refrigerator in reverse. The Rheem heat pump extracts the heat from the warm air, intensifies the heat with a compressor, delivers the heat to the water, and exhausts the cooler air out the top of the unit. Because it uses the warm ambient air temperature to do the work, it is a very efficient way to heat water. One of the biggest misconceptions about a heat pump’s operation is what happens to the energy used to run the heat pump. For the most part, this energy does not go into the water. The electricity powering the unit operates the compressor and fan, along with the other controls and electronics. The electrical input energy if converted to btu’s only amounts to roughly 14,000btu. The bulk of the btu output comes from the heat energy extracted from the air. That’s why they operate so efficiently and the energy savings are so significant.
What is C.O.P. and what does it mean to me, in simple terms?
C.O.P. stands for Co-efficient Of Performance.
It’s the way efficiency is measured for heat pump pool heaters. Believe it or not, it’s a very simple calculation. BTU Output ÷ BTU Input = C.O.P. see example of the C.O.P. calculation for the Rheem model 5350ti. So based on the calculation above, a Rheem heat pump delivers efficiencies in excess of 600%! The highest efficiency a gas pool heater can obtain is 98%. The mystery is solved.
This sounds too good to be true, prove it!
We thought you would never ask! Rheem is a proud member of AHRI. Our heat pump pool heaters are third party tested and certified under the AHRI 1160 standard. All performance numbers are listed on the AHRI website directory. The units are tested at a high ambient temperature condition and a low ambient temperature condition. Furthermore, every Rheem unit meets or exceeds the Florida 4.0 minimum C.O.P. requirement and is listed with the California Energy Commission. Unfortunately, not all manufacturers belong to AHRI and their published test data is questionable at best. When shopping for a pool heat pump, look for the AHRI Certified logo. This ensures that you are getting what you pay for, without the smoke and mirrors. Our units are also safety tested and certified by ETL, another third party testing agency. This ensures that all components and electrical design meet or exceed the UL-1995 stand
Old School or New School
Digital or Analog
Rheem is the only heat pump manufacturer that offers a digital or analog control for its complete heat pump line. We have you covered with the best of both worlds. Our digital control is easy to use, has a pool and spa temperature setting as well as full diagnostics. For those that prefer analog, Rheem offers our direct set thermostat. The easy-to-read, easy-to-use dials allow you to set your water temperature just the way you like it. Gone are the days of the guesswork involved with having to choose between the 'blue & red swoosh' like on your car's A/C…now you have the temperature targets displayed right on the dial!s!
Spiral “Rifled” Titanium Heat Exchanger
And they said it couldn't be done…Titanium has gained world recognition in just about every industry for its "nearly unbreakable" qualities. Additionally, due to Titanium's rigidity, it has been nearly impossible to design an ultra-efficient heat exchanger using this metal. Rheem is the first company to offer the Spiral "Rifled" Titanium Tube heat exchanger. This proven technique drastically increases the surface area where super-heated gases can safely transfer heat to water. Rifling a Titanium Tube Heat Exchanger provides a truly efficient waterway that withstands the abuses of harsh pool chemistry and erosion. The spiral "rifled" exchanger also helps reduce deposit buildup, and increases efficiency by performing a “scoop-and-lift” action. While neither Titanium nor rifling is new to the heat pump industry, leave it to Rheem to bring the best of both worlds together to maximize your backyard investment!

Just the right heat pump for climates that, in addition to having cooler-than-comfortable temperatures, can also have extremely hot summer months. With a Rheem Heat-Cool heat pump, your water temperature will always be comfortable. Just as households around the world have trusted us to heat their water during the colder months…Rheem will also have you relaxing in your pool during the hot days of summer with cool, refreshing, chilled pool water. Having the ability to pull out the extra degrees Mother Nature put in will make your pool the envy of the neighborhood. No matter what time of year, a Rheem Heat-Cool will have you swimming when others won’t venture outside.
How Does it Work?
Rheem Heat-Cool units have a unique reversing valve which enables the heat pump to not only take the chill out of the water, but also put it back in...Cooling your pool water during the hot summer months! Normally, a heat pump will gather heat energy from the air with its evaporator coil. Using Freon and several other components, the heat is transferred over to your pool water. By reversing this process the heat pump can actually take heat out of the water, transfer it to the Freon, and run it through the evaporator coil. The coil dissipates the heat into the air, much like a car’s radiator. This is also the method of defrost for the heat-cool model. In cold ambient conditions, a heat pump will ice-up when the ambient air drops below 45 degrees. With a heatcool unit, the ice will melt off in a matter of minutes when in defrost mode. Standard heat pumps rely on the ambient air being drawn across the coil, which could take hours to defrost the coil, depending on the air temperature.
FAQ's
1. Do I need to heat my pool?
After the investment of paying for, building and then maintaining a pool, don’t be stuck looking at a cold pool. If you find that you’re not able to enjoy your pool as much or as often as you’d like, heating it will increase your usage and the pleasure you get from owning your pool.
2. Is it expensive to operate a heat pump? Will it cost a lot on my power bill?
Fortunately, a heat pump is one of the most cost effective and affordable ways to heat your pool. To run the heat pump year round at a temperature of 85 degrees, on average, costs around $1000 for the entire year. Add a pool blanket and you can cut the cost more than half. These are average and general costs - to determine your usage and costs, there are sizing and cost guides. A Rheem representative can also give you more detailed information based on your pool’s unique information.
3. How does a heat pump work? Where does the heat come from?
A pool heater works on a simple process just like an air conditioner in reverse, which begins by transferring any available heat from the air into the heat pump. The evaporator coil or ribbed “fins” that wrap around the unit draw this heat from the air. This heat is introduced to refrigerant liquid and pushed through a compressor where it gets super heated. The heated refrigerant then passes through our rifled titanium heat exchanger. Here is where your pool water then passes over the titanium tubing with a rushing, turbulating effect in our “tube in tube” configuration. ALL of the pool water is exposed to the super heated titanium tubing, which heats the pool water. From there it flows back into your pool and you can begin enjoying and relaxing in your comfortable, heated pool.
4. What makes one heat pump better than another? Why should I choose a Rheem?
The Rheem pool heater is manufactured using the most advanced and state of the art computerized testing stations in the industry. It is designed so that it runs efficiently. High efficiency translates to cost savings. It utilizes the most powerful heat exchanger available insuring the greatest rate of heat transfer. Aside from its efficiency and performance the Rheem also incorporates many other features that make it a pleasure to use and own. Our low speed fan makes it the quietest heat pump available. The dual spa and pool thermostat and easy to read display board displays in plain language not cryptic codes. Don’t forget, we swim too!
It is true, all pool heaters heat pools. The difference is in how well they operate, and how much they cost to operate. If you were choosing to drive from Florida to New York – suppose you have a choice between an old pickup truck and a new, fuel efficient, automobile. The old pickup truck may indeed get you from Florida to New York, how much will it cost you in gas? How efficiently will it operate? Will it break down often? Will it work how and when you want, and will you be comfortable while using it?
5. What is the difference between a heat pump and other ways to heat your pool?
There are various ways to heat your pool and it’s important to understand your options so you make the best choice for you and your family’s swimming needs. A heat pump – considering cost, reliability, efficiency and usage tends to be the most cost effective and dependable. Other options include solar energy, also a reliable and very cost effective way to heat a pool. It involves installing several solar panels on your roof and is subject to the presence of the sun. Natural gas or Liquid propane heaters heat pools and spas quickly and under any weather conditions. The cost to operate these however is very expensive, costing 4-7 times more to operate than a heat pump. There are some scenarios where it makes sense to utilize a combination of heating methods, depending on your needs and pool usage. Your pool professional or Rheem representative can give you detailed information about your specific needs.
6. What does COP or Co-efficiency of Performance mean? What does that number mean to my operating cost?
COP is a term specifically used in heat transfer to describe the efficiency of any device transferring heat. All heaters are compared to a standard form of heating called resistance heating. Resistance heat is transferred by passing water over a red-hot coil (like in your hot water tank or toaster oven). This form of heating is constant and has a COP of 1 (one).
The COP of all heaters is compared to this standard, so a COP of 6.21 means that the heater is 6.21 times more efficient than resistant heating. If you compare that same heater to one with a COP of 4.14, a heater with a COP of 6.21 would be 50% more efficient.
If comparing to the automobile, this is the miles per gallon. The higher the number the less it will cost to operate.
7. How long will my heat pump last?
Heat pumps can last as long as the main components of the unit remain operational. Our warranty provides 10 years on the compressor and 15 years on the titanium heat exchanger. Your Rheem Heat Pump may outlast these warranties.
8. What is your warranty? What does it protect me from?
Rheem has the best warranty in the industry. There are no exclusions for unbalanced water chemistry like many other heaters. Please review our warranty in and out of the state of Florida.
9. What if I need assistance with my heater once it’s installed?
If you ever need assistance or have a question, simply call us on the phone. Our Heat Pump Services number is listed right on the front of every unit. Every single heater in the Rheem family comes with a birth certificate that includes its unique serial number and we’ll ask for that serial number, because it identifies YOUR individual unit. We’ll know exactly the day and time that specific unit was manufactured and will assist you with any questions. If your issue or question cannot be resolved via the phone, a technician will be dispatched to your location to attend to your unit within 24 – 48 hours. Heat Pump Services: 1-888-516-3076
10. Why does my pool “lose” heat? Can a blanket help retain heat?
Your pool’s heat loss is directly related to its surface area due to evaporative heat loss. By using the pool cover your operational cost of using a heat pump can be cut in more than half. It will also reduce evaporative loss of water out of your pool.
11. How do I know what size heat pump is right for my pool?
Many factors affect the need for heat in your unique pool. Factors such as pool size, temperature needs, water features (fountains, spas, waterfalls etc.), and blanket use and other factors contribute to properly sizing for your pool. An experienced pool technician should be able to calculate your needs by sight. We can also provide sizing with a program if we have a few bits of specific information. Contact us if you would like an analysis for your specific situation.
